Sixty pence. That’s what it cost to cross the West-Link Bridge when it first opened. Can you imagine?

The West-Link Bridge. A Dublin landmark. It’s more than just a bridge. It’s a vital artery connecting Dublin’s north and south suburbs. A crucial part of the M50 ring road. This wasn’t always the case.

Initially planned in the 1980s the West-Link was ambitious. It was set to be the largest bridge ever built in Ireland. The cost? A hefty £30 million. Minister for the Environment Pádraig Flynn launched the project in 1987. Construction began on a single-span structure. It opened in 1990 as part of the first phase of the M50. It was an innovative public-private partnership. NTR plc built and maintained the bridge in exchange for toll revenue for thirty years.

But Dublin grew. Traffic increased dramatically. The original two lanes in each direction proved insufficient. So they built another span. This second span opened in 2003. The West-Link now boasts four lanes in each direction.

The toll system also evolved. Initially a toll plaza with barriers caused massive traffic jams. These were infamous. Think hours of standstill. But in 2008 that changed. Electronic tolling replaced the barriers. Gantry-based cameras track cars. Drivers pay online or at Payzone outlets. The system is much faster and more efficient. It finally solved the notorious congestion problems.

Today the West-Link Bridge carries an average of 98,000 vehicles daily. It’s a critical link. It spans the River Liffey at the Strawberry Beds. It stretches 385 meters long. At its highest point it’s about 42 meters above the river. It’s a testament to engineering. A symbol of Dublin’s infrastructure. And a bridge that has truly stood the test of time. A constant reminder of how a well designed bridge can change a city.
