Opened in 1955 West Jefferson High School stands proudly. It’s a testament to the community’s dedication to education. This wasn’t just any school. It was a beacon of hope. A place where dreams were nurtured. West Jefferson High School originally comprised seven buildings. The main building housed classrooms and offices. A separate building contained the cafeteria library and more classrooms. An auditorium a gym and even a garage classroom building completed the initial campus. This sprawling 25-acre campus sits nestled near Brown Street Maple Avenue and the West Bank Expressway. It faces 8th Street in Harvey Louisiana.
The school’s opening night November 10 1955 was a grand affair. Mr Loney J Autin president of the Louisiana State Board of Education attended. So did Mr Shelby M Jackson Louisiana Superintendent of Education. Many other distinguished guests joined the celebration. Joseph J Martina became the first principal. Miss Lucile Cherbonnier served as his assistant. West Jefferson’s mascot the Buccaneer reflects the area’s rich history. Scarlet red and silver gray were chosen as the school colors. The school newspaper was aptly named the Jolly Roger.
West Jefferson High School’s first graduating class in 1956 numbered 283 seniors. They wore gray caps and gowns with red tassels. Their graduation ceremony took place in the school auditorium. Over the years graduation ceremonies moved to various venues including the Harvey Louisiana Municipal Auditorium. The University of New Orleans the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner and the Alario Center in Westwego all hosted these important events.
The school experienced tremendous growth. A new classroom building was added in 1960. In 1961 West Jefferson Buccaneer Stadium opened. This impressive 8500-seat structure cost $350000. The stadium hosted the first football game on October 13 1961. The Buccaneers defeated the Bogalusa Lumberjacks 13-6.
Hurricane Katrina in 2005 caused significant damage to the school. Despite this setback West Jefferson High School persevered. In 2023 the school absorbed a portion of the attendance boundary from the closed Helen Cox High School. This demonstrates West Jefferson’s enduring role in the community. The school offers a free transportation program for its students. It’s also designated a Title I school. This speaks volumes about the school’s commitment to providing a quality education to all students. The legacy of West Jefferson High School continues. It remains a symbol of pride and achievement for its students and the entire community.
