What if I told you that this building, the West Hub, is designed to spark “serendipitous collisions?” It is not a place for accidents. It’s a place for planned encounters.

The West Hub represents a radical change. It sits at the heart of the West Cambridge Innovation District. The West Hub is a meeting place. It allows people to connect and socialize. This building marks a new approach to shared resources.

The West Hub opened on April 26. It is open to everyone at the University and the public. Academics, researchers, students, and businesses all come here. The West Hub is a place to share, learn, and collaborate. It has flexible spaces for everyone. This three-story building features a shop, cafeteria, and the site’s first bar. The West Hub is on JJ Thomson Avenue. It is designed to be a focal point for the community. It brings a new vibrancy to the area. The West Hub is open to all from Monday to Friday. It welcomes visitors between 8am and 9pm.

Anna Steeden is the West Hub’s Operations Manager. She calls it a pioneering development. It is social in nature. It was designed from the ground up with people in mind. The West Hub fosters connectivity. It promotes those serendipitous “collisions”. Its flexibility means its spaces meet the daily needs of all users. The West Hub’s amenities bring a new vibrancy to the site.

The West Hub connects industry with academic expertise. It supports collaboration and enterprise. It also provides additional learning space. The University’s Foundation Year program is housed here. The first cohort of students arrived in October 2022.

The cafeteria and bar open directly into green space. There is external seating outside. The area is landscaped with rain gardens and recreational space. It is also close to a pedestrian and cycle path. The upper floors have a library, media lab, and multi-use spaces. There are learning resource areas and workspaces too. These range from open areas to individual study booths. Businesses and the community can use learning spaces and meeting rooms. These are available outside core teaching times. Activities include networking events, talks, and art exhibitions.

Professor Andy Neely is Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Enterprise and Business Relations. He says the West Hub has created a new heart. It serves the West Cambridge Innovation District. It brings people together. It provides co-working spaces. University departments, research collaborations, and local businesses all use it. Local residents are welcome too. The West Hub starts the site’s transformation. It is becoming a more outward-facing campus. The goal is to “put the science on show.” It nurtures the entrepreneurial strengths of the Cambridge Cluster. It takes the University’s research and technology to the next level.

Jestico + Whiles designed the West Hub. It is a low-energy building. The building has earned an “Excellent” BREEAM rating. This is the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method. High-performance building fabric and passive design measures are in place. These use the building’s geometry. They also use the natural movement of heat, air, and light. These features keep conditions comfortable. They reduce the Hub’s energy demand. Active design measures further reduce energy use. These include lighting sensors and heat recovery. Low and zero carbon technologies have been implemented. An optimised ground source heat pump system is used. This achieves a 10% reduction in carbon emissions. It moves away from gas as the primary fuel. Heating and hot water are generated differently.

James Tatham is a Director at Jestico + Whiles. He says they focused on the human need for connectivity and collaboration. They used their specialist skills. These skills came from research, education, co-working, and cafeteria design. They created a holistic scheme. It responds dynamically to the changing needs of the university year.

The Cambridge City Council approved the West Cambridge Innovation District scheme in 2021. The Ray Dolby Centre is the new centerpiece of the Cavendish Laboratory. The site already houses research in technology and the physical sciences. The University sits at the heart of the Cambridge Cluster. More than 5,300 firms employ more than 67,000 people here. They generate £18 billion in turnover.
