Have you ever wondered what lies beyond the bustling streets of Houston? Nestled in the heart of the city, an oasis of peace awaits – the West Houston Zen Center. Founded in 2003, the center is a place where people from all walks of life can find solace and guidance in the teachings of Zen Buddhism. Think of it as a place where the city’s energy melts away, replaced by stillness and mindful awareness.
The center was established thanks to the dedication of the Houston Zen Community, who had been practicing together since 1990. They invited Konjin (Setsuan) Godwin, a dharma successor in the Suzuki Roshi lineage, to guide them. Under her guidance, the community flourished. In 2007, the West Houston Zen Center moved to its current location in a spacious 1918 Craftsman-style building, three blocks north of its original location. The new location included two meditation halls, the hojo (abbot’s residence), an organic garden, monks’ residences, and classrooms. There are plenty of places for you to explore and learn the wisdom of Zen Buddhism.
The West Houston Zen Center offers a variety of programs, including daily zazen, monthly sesshin, morning service, and classes on Buddhism. The center also hosts annual events, such as the Rohatsu sesshin, New Year’s observances, and a Nirvana celebration. Join us in this sacred space to discover the beauty of Zen practice. In this serene sanctuary, the West Houston Zen Center offers a unique opportunity to embrace the timeless wisdom of Zen Buddhism and embark on a journey of self-discovery. It’s a place where you can find peace amidst the chaos of city life and delve deeper into the meaning of existence.
