What if these walls could talk? The red and black of West High School have seen generations come and go since 1890. West High School isn’t just any school. It’s the oldest public high school in Utah. Originally called Salt Lake High, West High School has been a cornerstone of this community for over a century. Imagine the whispers of history echoing in its hallways. West High School stands as a testament to the power of education. It’s a place where dreams are nurtured and futures are forged. Did you know that West High School boasts an impressive athletic legacy? With twenty-one football state championships, nine for boys’ track, and four for boys’ tennis, the Panthers have certainly left their mark. From legendary athletes like Tony Finau to literary giants like Shannon Hale, West High School has shaped the lives of countless individuals who have gone on to achieve greatness. Notable alumni include Harvard Business School professor Clayton Christensen and even a former president of the LDS Church, Thomas S. Monson. Sadly, a piece of West High School’s history is lost to us. The original Technical High School building, an architectural masterpiece designed by Lewis Cannon and John Fetzer, once stood proudly on this block. Adorned with sculptures by Mahonri Young, it was a true work of art. Despite being listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the building was demolished in the late 1990s. Only a few salvaged sculptures remain as a reminder of its grandeur. West High School is more than bricks and mortar. It is a living, breathing entity. It is a repository of memories, a cradle of ambition, and a symbol of enduring community spirit.
