Three imposing archways beckon. This is the West Prosperity Gate Xihuamen a pivotal point in Beijing’s history. It stands not in the middle of the Forbidden City’s west wall but slightly south. This strategic placement facilitated access to the outer court for officials. It minimized disruptions to the inner court’s imperial life.

The gate’s tower is a marvel. Five rooms wide and three rooms deep it once housed cotton and ingot armor for the army’s parades. Its nameplate initially displayed Mongolian Chinese and Manchu characters. Over time only Chinese characters remained.

Xihuamen witnessed dramatic events. In 1813 members of the Tianlijiao rebel group attempted to assassinate Emperor Jiaqing. They entered through this very gate. Their daring attack reached the Qianqingmen square before being thwarted. This incident profoundly shocked the Qing rulers. Emperor Jiaqing issued a decree of repentance.

More drama unfolded in 1900. Empress Dowager Cixi and Emperor Guangxu fled the Forbidden City through Xihuamen. They escaped the Boxer Rebellion’s aftermath and the allied forces’ advance. This desperate flight highlights the gate’s role in pivotal moments of imperial life. Later Cixi paid a substantial sum to return safely to the Forbidden City.

The West Prosperity Gate Xihuamen silently guards centuries of stories. It whispers tales of imperial power rebellions and desperate escapes. Stand here and feel the weight of history etched into these very stones. Let the grandeur of this structure transport you to a time of emperors eunuchs and daring uprisings. The West Gate Xihuamen a true testament to Beijing’s rich and complex past.
