Stepping into a time machine, let’s whirl back to 1929. The West Farms Library first opened its doors as a modest sub-branch of the New York Public Library. This wasn’t its final home, though. Imagine the bustling energy of 1954 as the West Farms Library settled into its current location on Honeywell Avenue. It quickly became a cornerstone of the South Bronx community. The West Farms Library has always served a diverse population. From the beginning, it welcomed Latinx and African-American communities. Over time, it embraced immigrants from Asia and Africa. This library isn’t just about books. It’s a dynamic hub. The West Farms Library hosts weekly Online Storytime on the expansive children’s floor upstairs. Picture families gathered, rocking and singing along. Downstairs, adults and teens share a space. This space holds beginner and intermediate ESOL classes each week. The West Farms Library also features two meeting rooms. These are equipped with a projector and a 75-inch television. An ADA-accessible elevator and entrances ensure everyone can access the library. Central air conditioning keeps visitors comfortable. West Farms Library also underwent a renovation through the Adopt-a-Branch Program. This revitalization brought restored walls, fresh finishes, and new air conditioning. The addition of a ramp and elevator made the library fully accessible. Think about relaxing in a 1,200 square-foot outdoor reading area. This peaceful oasis opens off the first floor, offering a quiet escape. The West Farms Library continually strives to provide inclusive programming and services. It partners with community organizations like VIP Services, Community Board 6, Cardinal McCloskey Day Care, and Phipps Neighborhoods.
