“Imagine a time when Atlanta was starkly divided,” a hush fell over the group as I began, “when the color of your skin determined where you could sit in a house of worship.” We stand before the West End Church of Christ, a beacon of faith and resilience that bore witness to this tumultuous era. Founded in 1929, the West End Church of Christ initially served a predominantly white congregation. However, the church’s commitment to spreading the gospel extended to Atlanta’s growing black community. In a bold move, they held a citywide evangelistic campaign led by the renowned evangelist Marshal Keeble. This led to the birth of the Simpson Street Church of Christ, an all-black congregation. But here’s where the story takes a poignant turn: black members who wished to worship at the West End Church of Christ were relegated to the balcony, entering through a separate entrance. They could only watch from above as their white counterparts filled the main sanctuary. Yet, their faith never wavered. They prayed for a day when the barriers of segregation would crumble. That day arrived, albeit gradually, as “white flight” transformed the West End neighborhood. Recognizing the need for change, the church elders began actively recruiting black members. In 1973, a pivotal moment occurred when Dorothy Griffin transferred from the Simpson Street Church of Christ. The congregation welcomed her, but there was a sense that true integration would only be achieved when Wesley Brown, a respected black minister, agreed to lead them. Brown, initially hesitant, felt the call and joined the church’s staff, eventually becoming their lead minister. This marked a turning point, breaking down racial barriers within the West End Church of Christ. Today, the church stands as a testament to the power of faith and perseverance, a place where the echoes of segregation are replaced by the harmonious blend of voices united in worship. Their story reminds us that the true church is not confined by walls or divided by color, but built on a foundation of love and equality – a powerful message that resonates deeply within these hallowed halls.
