West Eleventh Church of God

Deep in the heart of Houston, the West Eleventh Church of God whispers tales of faith and perseverance. Right here, at 1001 West 11th Street, a spiritual journey began over ninety years ago. The West Eleventh Church of God’s story is a testament to the power of personal witness. It all started with a black woman evangelist, a servant of Mrs. Thomas H. Ball. Mrs. Ball, wife of a prominent lawyer and former congressional representative, experienced a profound conversion. Inspired by her newfound faith, she purchased a tent and started a Sunday School. This humble beginning marked the first work of the Church of God in Houston. The church’s first permanent home was a modest space above a drugstore on North Main. The congregation later acquired a Baptist church building on Bishop Street in 1915, officially becoming known as the Church of God. The West Eleventh Church of God’s roots in the Heights neighborhood date back to 1936. It was then that land was purchased on West 11th Street. A small building was erected, laying the foundation for future growth. The church’s vision expanded in 1953 with the establishment of the South Texas Bible Institute, later renamed Gulf Coast Bible College. This institution aimed to train young men and women for ministry. In 1975, the West Eleventh Church of God moved to its current location, serving the then-outer reaches of Northwest Houston. A few years later, in 1977, the church launched the Wee Care Day Care ministry. Today, the West Eleventh Church of God continues its mission of serving the community. It offers solace to the hurting, friendship to the lonely, and teachings of Christ’s love. The church’s legacy is a testament to its enduring commitment to building God’s kingdom, one soul at a time.
