Ready to explore the history of West Carson? This vibrant community has a rich past. It is filled with stories of Native Americans, Spanish settlers, and modern growth.

West Carson began long ago. Native Americans, known as the Gabrielino Indians, first called this area home. They lived in villages. One prominent village was Suangna. It was located on about 100 acres of land. This area is now part of West Carson.

The Gabrielino lived here for hundreds of years. They built domed homes. These homes had thatched exteriors. Men and women wore long hair. They also tattooed their bodies. They used vegetable charcoal dye and thorns. The Gabrielino near the coast ate fish. They also consumed seafood, acorns, seeds, and small game.

The Spanish arrived in the late 1700s. They displaced the Gabrielino Indians. Many Gabrielino went to the Mission San Gabriel. Some went voluntarily. Others were forced. The Spanish government granted land to its citizens. Juan Jose Dominguez received the first land grant in Southern California. This land became Rancho San Pedro.

Dominguez raised cattle and horses on Rancho San Pedro. This ranching tradition lasted over a hundred years. The Dominguez family played a big role in the area’s history. West Carson’s destiny was tied to them for many years.

Later, Dominguez’s descendants began selling land. Small farmers moved in. They built houses. They planted vegetables and grains. They raised chickens and dairy cattle. Oil was discovered. Refineries and drilling operations started. By the 1920s, West Carson had some industrial operations.

World War II changed West Carson. Workers moved into new homes. They wanted to be close to defense industry jobs. After the war, Southern California’s population grew fast. Large residential developments appeared. New homes brought new businesses.

In 1968, West Carson became part of the City of Carson. Before that, it was an unincorporated area. Residents wanted more control over their community. They voted to incorporate as a city. The city was named after John Manuel Carson. He was an important figure in the community’s development. He was also related to the Dominguez family.

Before the incorporation of Carson in 1968, the area was known as the “garbage can of Los Angeles County”. There were many junkyards and landfills. However, after the incorporation, the city began to improve.

Today, West Carson is a thriving part of the City of Carson. It has a diverse population and a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial areas. The community has come a long way from its early days as a Native American village and a Spanish rancho. West Carson continues to grow and evolve. It honors its past while looking toward the future.
