In the heart of Accra, Ghana, lies the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding. The West Africa Network for Peacebuilding, or WANEP, isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the enduring human spirit, striving for peace in a region marked by conflict. The West Africa Network for Peacebuilding was born in 1998, amidst the devastating civil wars that scarred West Africa in the 1990s. Founded by Samuel Gbaydee Doe and Emmanuel Habuka Bombande, two visionary peacebuilders, the West Africa Network For Peacebuilding aimed to build bridges of understanding and cooperation across the region. WANEP’s founders envisioned a West Africa where local communities could resolve conflicts peacefully, without outside intervention. Today, the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding boasts over 500 member organizations spread across the fifteen ECOWAS member states. It has national secretariats in each country, working tirelessly to prevent conflict and promote lasting peace. WANEP’s work is deeply collaborative. It partners with civil society organizations, governments, intergovernmental bodies, women’s groups, and countless others. This collaborative approach creates a vital platform for dialogue, shared learning, and collective action for peace. The West Africa Network for Peacebuilding has achieved remarkable milestones. It holds a special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and serves as the West Africa Regional Representative of the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC). Furthermore, WANEP has a Memorandum of Understanding with both the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), highlighting its crucial role in regional peace and security. It even provides technical resources to the ECOWAS Early Warning System (ECOWARN) and the AU’s Early Warning System, the African Reporter. The West Africa Network for Peacebuilding offers professional courses in conflict prevention and peacebuilding. These courses, informed by years of practical experience, empower governments, businesses, and practitioners throughout West Africa and beyond. At its core, the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding is driven by a deep commitment to professionalism, mutual respect, tolerance, and a vision of a world where peace prevails.
