Across the shimmering expanse of the Fore River, with the Boston skyline etched against the horizon, stretches Wessagusset Beach. Wessagusset Beach isn’t just a picturesque spot. It whispers tales of a tumultuous past, a clash of cultures, and the enduring spirit of a land shaped by both conflict and resilience. Wessagusset Beach, also known as “old beach,” takes its name from the ill-fated colony established here in 1622 by Thomas Weston. Imagine those early settlers gazing out at the same view, a mixture of awe and apprehension in their eyes. The beach’s sandy expanse, located east of the Wessagusset Yacht Club, is a deceptively tranquil setting. A historical marker near Wessagusset Beach, at Great Hill Park, recounts the strained relationship between the European colonists and the native Massachusett tribe. The marker, placed in 1923 and rededicated in 1998, highlights the 1623 Massacre at Wessagusset. Myles Standish, often portrayed as a Plymouth Colony hero, emerges in this context as a complex figure. His actions at Wessagusset, where he lured members of the Neponset band of the Massachusett tribe into a building and attacked them, cast a long shadow. This event, fueled by Standish’s unfounded fears of a conspiracy, underscores the tragic misunderstandings that marked this period. The remains of Wituwamat and Pecksuot, two Native American leaders who lost their lives in the conflict, now rest at Old North Cemetery in Weymouth. Wessagusset Beach is more than just sand and surf. It is a poignant reminder of a complex history, inviting us to reflect on the many layers of stories embedded in the land beneath our feet.
