Peacefully stands the Werner-Sylten Kapelle. It’s a haven of quiet reflection nestled within the St Laurentius Cemetery. This unassuming chapel holds a powerful story. A story of faith courage and resistance during the darkest hours of German history.

The Werner-Sylten Kapelle wasn’t always known by this name. Built in 1880 it was modernized in 1926. For many years it served as a simple cemetery chapel. Then in 2009 it received its current name. This renaming was a tribute to a remarkable man. A man whose life intertwined with the very fabric of this place.

That man was Pastor Werner Sylten. Born in 1893 Sylten was a courageous opponent of Nazism. A theologian of Jewish descent he risked his life to save others. He worked tirelessly alongside Pastor Heinrich Grüber. Together they led the “Grüber Office”. This organization secretly helped Jewish people flee Germany.

Sylten’s selfless acts didn’t go unnoticed. In 1941 he was arrested and sent to Dachau concentration camp. He endured horrific conditions. Yet he continued his ministry even in the face of unimaginable suffering. His unwavering faith and compassion are truly inspiring.

Tragically Sylten perished in the Hartheim Euthanasia Center. This center murdered thousands of people deemed “unworthy of life”. His death on August 26 1942 became a symbol of resilience in the face of oppression.

The Werner-Sylten Kapelle now stands as a memorial. It remembers Sylten’s sacrifice and the countless lives he touched. The quiet dignity of the chapel reflects his spirit. It whispers a tale of faith hope and the enduring power of human kindness. A mobile ramp allows wheelchair access today. The chapel seats up to 75 people. It contains a modern organ and a CD player. A glass-enclosed heated waiting area provides shelter.

More than a place of worship the Werner-Sylten Kapelle is a testament to courage. It’s a solemn reminder of the horrors of the past and a beacon of hope for the future. It’s a place to pause reflect and honor the legacy of a remarkable man. A man who lived and died for his beliefs. A man whose name now graces this beautiful chapel forever. Let us take a moment to reflect on his life and his enduring legacy.
