Werner-Seelenbinder-Sportplatz

1921. A bustling crowd gathered on a former military parade ground known as the Musterwiese. They weren’t here for a military drill, but for something far more unifying: the grand opening of a new sports complex. This complex would eventually become the Werner-Seelenbinder-Sportplatz. This marked a significant moment for Brandenburg an der Havel, a city embracing the power of sport to bring people together. The Werner-Seelenbinder-Sportplatz, as we know it today, is more than just a stadium. It’s a testament to the dedication of local sports clubs, namely Brandenburger Ballspiel Club 05, SV Havel 08, and Turnverein 62. These clubs poured their resources and efforts into transforming the Musterwiese into this sporting haven. Initially, the complex was divided, with separate areas for BBC 05 and TV 62, leading to two separate opening ceremonies on June 12th and 18th, 1921. Eventually, BBC 05 became the sole user. The Werner-Seelenbinder-Sportplatz has seen its share of transformations over the years. A modest wooden grandstand, built around 1935 to accommodate about 200 spectators, was later demolished in the 1980s. The complex also once housed a velodrome, one of about 25 open-air tracks in the former GDR. This track, with its concrete surface and a capacity for 15,000 spectators, has since been replaced by the northern training field, though remnants of the south stand can still be seen. The stadium has also witnessed historic moments beyond football. In 1958, it hosted a rugby union international match between East Germany and Romania. Over 3,000 spectators watched the thrilling 5-5 draw, the only tie East Germany ever achieved against Romania. Following World War II, the complex was renamed in honor of Werner Seelenbinder, a wrestler, Olympian, and communist, executed by the Nazis in 1944. A memorial bust stands at the entrance, a poignant reminder of his legacy. Today, the Werner-Seelenbinder-Sportplatz serves as the home ground of Brandenburger SC Süd 05. The stadium boasts a covered seating stand with 500 seats, and in 2014/15, its total capacity reached 5,000. Even amidst challenges, like the severe damage caused by a supercell storm in August 2023, the Werner-Seelenbinder-Sportplatz continues to be a vital part of Brandenburg an der Havel’s sporting landscape.
