In the late 18th century, Wentworth House emerged on Chesterton Road. A grand building with stuccoed timber-framed walls upon a brick plinth, crowned with tiled mansard roofs, Wentworth House has seen Cambridge life unfold through its windows. In 1901, life inside Wentworth House bustled. Emily Kirby, a 40-year-old cook from Suffolk, managed the kitchen. Esher Chapman, a 25-year-old housemaid born in nearby Quy, kept the house in order. A few years later, in 1913, the atmosphere changed. Basil E. Hammond, a Fellow of Trinity College and Lecturer in History, resided within Wentworth House’s walls. The decades marched on, bringing new occupants. By 1962, John E. Stevens called Wentworth House home. Wentworth House stands as a silent observer of Cambridge’s ever-changing story. Each resident, from servants to scholars, has woven their lives into the fabric of this historic building.
