Have you ever felt the ancient whispers of history? Right here before you stands Wenshu Monastery a place where the past unfolds. This magnificent Buddhist temple in Chengdu’s Qingyang district boasts a history stretching back over a thousand years. Legend says its origins trace back to the Sui dynasty when a consort of Princess Yang Xiu built the first temple.

Through the ages Wenshu Monastery has endured. It changed names several times. It was called Miaoyuan Tayuan during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. Then Xinxiang Temple during the Song dynasty. A devastating fire at the end of the Ming dynasty destroyed much of the temple. Only ten iron statues and ancient China firs survived.

However the spirit of Wenshu Monastery persevered. In 1681 Master Cidu arrived rebuilding a thatched cottage. He renamed it Wenshu Temple the name it still bears today. Extensive renovations and rebuilding projects continued into 1706 under the Qing dynasty’s Kangxi Emperor. Abbot Benyuan further expanded the temple during the Jiaqing and Daoguang periods.

Wenshu Monastery is a treasure trove of Buddhist art and relics. A finger bone relic of the Sakyamuni Buddha is enshrined here. Master Nenghai brought it from Bodh Gaya India. A parietal bone relic of Xuanzang is also preserved. This came from Bao’en Temple in Nanjing Jiangsu.

The monastery’s architecture is stunning. The central axis features the Four Heavenly Kings Hall. The Hall of Three Sages of the West enshrines Guanyin Amitabha and Mahasthamaprapta. The Mahavira Hall houses a magnificent sitting statue of Sakyamuni. The Dharma Hall is dedicated to Bhaisajyaguru.

In 1983 Wenshu Temple received a significant honor. The State Council of China designated it a National Key Buddhist Temple in the Han Chinese Area. Today Wenshu Monastery remains a vibrant center of Buddhist practice. It’s also a serene oasis in the heart of Chengdu a place where you can feel the profound connection between history and faith. Step inside and let the tranquility wash over you as you experience this remarkable piece of Chengdu’s living heritage.
