It’s a poignant narrative etched in brick and mortar. Weltbaum 2 is like an open-air gallery. A dominant bas-relief, smaller reliefs, plaques, and inscribed panels create a symphony of images and words. The mural stretches nearly 100 meters, almost the entire length of the platform. The centerpiece is a large tree, its branches reaching across the wall. From this tree emerge figures, some grotesque and skull-like, others serene like a mother and child. This powerful imagery reflects the destructive nature of humanity. The mural also features quotes from literary figures like Bertolt Brecht and Friedrich Schiller, their words adding layers of meaning to the artwork. Weltbaum 2 was created by Ben Wagin and 18 other artists. It was unveiled on November 1, 1986. Before Weltbaum 2, a locomotive painting by Hans-Dieter Bolle graced the wall. The mural was nearly lost in 2021 due to planned renovations. Thankfully, it was placed under monument protection in late 2022, ensuring its survival for future generations.
