Hidden in the courtyard of the Federal Labour Court, the Weltachse Sculpture whispers secrets to those who pause. The Weltachse, German for “World Axis,” isn’t just a towering stack of ultramarine blue bronze cubes. It’s an artistic embodiment of a concept that has captivated humankind for centuries: the Axis Mundi. Jürgen Partenheimer, the sculptor, first explored this idea in 1983. He envisioned a link between heaven and earth, a connection to the cosmos. The Weltachse Sculpture in Erfurt, created in 1999, is one of many he’s placed around the world, each unique in its height and number of cubes. This particular Weltachse boasts 14 cubes. Partenheimer chose ultramarine blue for a reason. It’s the color of the deep sea and the night sky, echoing the mysteries of both. The sculpture’s dimensions weren’t randomly chosen.
