Wells Fargo Center

Gazing up at this towering giant, wouldn’t you guess it’s seen a few name changes? This is the Wells Fargo Center, once known as the American Stores Tower and even the Delta Tower. The Wells Fargo Center first opened its doors in 1998. It was originally intended as the headquarters for American Stores. They were the company behind grocery and pharmacy chains like Sav-on, Osco, and Jewel. But the corporate landscape shifted. Shortly after the building was finished, American Stores was acquired by Albertsons. The building was briefly renamed the Delta Tower. Albertsons eventually decided to move their operations to another building in the city. Then Wasatch Property Management stepped in, purchased the tower, and gave it its current name: the Wells Fargo Center. For a time, this building became the nerve center for the 2002 Winter Olympics, housing the Salt Lake Organizing Committee. Today, the Wells Fargo Center’s tenants include, of course, Wells Fargo, along with several prominent law firms. Look closely at the building’s exterior. It’s a blend of glass and a distinctive granite called “Cold Springs salt and pepper,” giving it a unique look. And if you look up, you might spot the two helipads on the roof, part of the American Stores Heliport. Did you know this building also houses KUTV, a local television station? The Wells Fargo Center stands tall at 422 feet, with 24 stories above ground and one below. Designed by HKS Architects, it boasts 13 elevators to whisk people between its floors.
