Gang warfare? Council tenements? Football glory? Wellhouse isn’t just a name on a map. It’s a story etched in the heart of Glasgow’s East End. Right here, in the shadow of the M8 motorway, a community was forged. Wellhouse emerged in the late 1950s as part of the “Greater Easterhouse” initiative. The original council tenements have seen a lot. Many were refurbished in the 21st century, while others were demolished and replaced with modern housing. Look around. You can see the mix of old and new, a testament to the area’s evolution. Wellhouse boasts two primary schools: Aultmore Park Primary and Newhills Additional Support Needs School. A row of shops, a youth facility with a children’s play area, and a modern community centre stand as hubs of local life. Yet, there are also empty spaces, remnants of demolished structures like Blessed John Ogilvie’s church and the old Wellhouse Primary School. These vacant lots whisper tales of what once was, and the challenges faced, such as flooding and water mitigation issues that have hindered redevelopment. While separated from the main Easterhouse scheme by the M8, Wellhouse shares a complex relationship with its neighbours, Barlanark and Easthall. A history of gang-related tensions and violence has cast a shadow, but the community has strived to create positive change through initiatives that offer alternatives to gang activity and build bridges between neighbourhoods. Wellhouse is also a place of sporting triumph. Remember Wellhouse AFC? This amateur football team clinched the Scottish Amateur Cup in 2013, a moment of pure joy and community pride, before sadly folding in 2015 after 40 years on the pitch. Wellhouse is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a tapestry woven with threads of resilience, community spirit, and the echoes of both triumph and challenge.
