Ever heard of a place where ships get a personalized welcome? Here at the Willkomm-Höft in Wedel, just outside Hamburg, it happens daily. Willkomm-Höft translates to “Welcome Point”. It’s not just a name; it’s a promise. A promise of a unique maritime experience. Since 1952, this unassuming spot by the Schulauer Fährhaus restaurant has been serenading ships with their national anthems. Imagine, a Japanese cargo ship, the Agaki Maru, was the first to receive this honor.

The Willkomm-Höft isn’t just about playing music. It’s a meticulously orchestrated welcome. Five dedicated “welcoming captains” run the show. They track ships passing Stadersand inbound or Finkenwerder outbound. They announce details over loudspeakers: the ship’s name, nationality, even quirky trivia. This information comes from a massive, handwritten card index with details on around 17,000 ships.

The tradition goes beyond a simple “hello”. For ships over 1,000 gross tons, the Hamburg flag dips, the ship’s national anthem plays, and a farewell message is broadcast in their language. Think of it as a floating welcome wagon. This ceremony happens between 8:00 AM and sunset, or until 8:00 PM. Smaller vessels receive a flag dip. This special welcome happens for ships arriving and departing the Port of Hamburg.

Visitors can enjoy this spectacle from the pier or the Schulauer Fährhaus. The restaurant even offers information about the passing ships, enhancing the experience. The Willkomm-Höft has endured its share of challenges. Floods in 1962 and 1976 caused significant damage, each time requiring a taller flagpole and another bottle of rum for good luck.

The Willkomm-Höft experience blends tradition and technology. While the captains rely on their handwritten index, online resources like MarineTraffic.com offer real-time ship tracking. This blend of old and new creates a truly special experience. So, next time you’re near Hamburg, make your way to the Willkomm-Höft. Witness this charming tradition where ships are more than just vessels. They are welcomed guests.
