“Is that mud… or something else?” a child’s voice echoed across Weinam Creek. Weinam Creek has seen its share of muddy days. It’s a place where the land meets the sea, specifically in the Redland City Council area, a part of Moreton Bay Marine Park. Weinam Creek itself stretches across 42 hectares, nestled between Weinam Street to the west and the shimmering expanse of Moreton Bay to the east. Peel Street marks its northern boundary, while Moores Road defines its southern edge. This little creek has been a hub of activity for years, a place where boats bobbed, and dreams set sail. In 1955, a man named John McGinnis Williams, a local with a passion for boats, established a boatshed on Auster Street along Weinam Creek. His daughter, Julie Love, recalled the hustle and bustle of those days. She remembered a street sign going up, “Ruster Street,” a tribute to the local fishermen or “rusters” who also had sheds along the creek. Somehow, the “R” mysteriously transformed into an “A.” Williams’s boatshed later passed into the hands of Roger Moore. In 2009, a reunion brought Love back to Redland Bay. Moore surprised her with photos of speedboats from her father’s races in 1925, discovered in the roof of the old boatshed. Weinam Creek isn’t just about boats though. It’s also a place of transformation. The Weinam Creek Priority Development Area (PDA) was established in 2013. This project is breathing new life into the area. A new boat ramp, a temporary car park, and plans for a multi-level car park are underway. Imagine a vibrant commercial precinct rising along the waterfront, filled with shops and possibly even a medical center. The project is expected to create hundreds of jobs and inject millions into the local economy. Weinam Creek, a place where history whispers on the breeze, where the mud hides secrets of the past, and where the future is being built, one project at a time.
