Have you ever felt the serene presence of a lake without a name? Welcome to Weiming Lake. Nestled in the heart of Peking University this picturesque body of water holds a rich history. Once a royal garden in the Qing Dynasty it now serves as a tranquil oasis for students and visitors alike.

Weiming Lake’s very name is a story in itself. Many attempted to capture its essence in a name but failed. The renowned scholar Qian Mu finally named it Weiming Lake meaning a lake without a name. This name perfectly reflects the lake’s spirit of freedom. It mirrors the spirit of Peking University itself. The university is known for its lack of a motto and school song.

The lake’s history extends beyond its evocative name. It was once part of the Shuchun Garden. This garden was a gift from Emperor Qianlong to his favorite minister Heshen. The garden underwent extensive construction under Heshen’s direction. Much of its original design was sadly destroyed. This destruction was due to the Anglo-French expedition to China. Today remnants of Shuchun Garden remain integrated into the university campus. One such remnant is the base of a marble boat on the south side of Weiming Lake. The boat is a replica of one used by the emperor. While its wooden upper structure burned down the marble base remains a peaceful spot. Students and visitors still enjoy sitting by the water.

Weiming Lake is more than just a historical site. It’s a vibrant ecosystem teeming with life. Ducks fish squirrels birds and even black swans inhabit the area. Spring paints the landscape in shades of pink white and green. The scene is set against the backdrop of the blue water. Winter brings a different kind of beauty. The lake freezes over providing a perfect skating rink for the university students. Weiming Lake has witnessed countless moments of student life. It has seen determination confusion tears laughter friendship and love on its shores.

This beautiful lake is an integral part of Peking University’s identity. It’s not merely a scenic spot but a heart of the campus a place where history nature and community converge. As you gaze upon its tranquil waters let the spirit of Weiming Lake resonate within you. Reflect on the enduring legacy of this unnamed lake. Remember that even without a name its essence speaks volumes.
