Imagine a place carved out of the Ga South Municipal Assembly. That place is the Weija-Gbawe Municipal District. It is one of Ghana’s 261 Metropolitan Municipal and District Assemblies.

The Weija-Gbawe Municipal District is located in the Greater Accra Region. It was inaugurated on March 15 2018. This happened alongside 37 other newly created districts. Before that, it was known as the Ga South Municipal Assembly. A legislative instrument LI 1867 changed its name in March 2018.

Weija-Gbawe sits in Accra’s southwestern part. Its location is between latitudes 5°47’30″N and 5°27’30″N. It also lies between longitudes 0°31’30″W and 0°16’30″W. The district covers approximately 502.31 square kilometers. It includes about 120 settlements.

The Municipality shares borders with several other districts. Ga South Municipal lies to the north and southwest. Ga Central Municipal is to the east. Ablekuma North Municipal is to the southeast. The Gulf of Guinea is to the south.

The population of Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly is significant. The 2021 PHC report counted 213674 residents. This number includes 104910 males and 108764 females.

The Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly (WGMA) has a vision. It aims for a united municipality. This unity combines economic dynamism with social justice. Their mission focuses on improving life quality. They plan to mobilize resources for service delivery. This occurs within a framework of good governance and accountability.

Administratively, the Assembly follows the Local Government Act of 1993. The District Chief Executive leads the Assembly. Elected members represent each electoral area. The District Coordinating Director serves as Secretary.

The Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly offers various services. These include building permit registration. They also handle marriage registration. Waste management is another key service. Signage permit processing is available as well.
