Did you know Weiher Friedrichsfelde Nord started as an explosion crater? It’s right here in the Marzahn district of Berlin. This little pond has a big story. Originally a simple explosion crater it was later transformed into a fishpond. That’s right a fishpond. People used Weiher Friedrichsfelde Nord to raise fish. But by 1973 fishing was abandoned. Sadly the pond fell into disrepair. It became a dumping ground. Years later in 1981 tons of rubbish were cleared. The following year the pond was dredged. In 1983 Weiher Friedrichsfelde Nord was finally protected. Regular cleanups removed more debris and waste. In 1993 700 cubic meters of fresh water improved the water quality significantly. Near the end of the 1990s the canals of a nearby allotment garden were reopened. Today Weiher Friedrichsfelde Nord is a vital habitat. Protected and safe it teems with life. It is a breeding ground for many species. Willow trees and beech trees provide shade. You can even find rosehips hazelnuts and blackberries. In the southern section a meadow provides a habitat for bees. A beehive sits quietly nearby. The pond itself is a haven. Crested newts common newts common toads garlic toads grass frogs and common pool frogs all thrive here. The whole area is fenced to protect this valuable ecosystem. Weiher Friedrichsfelde Nord a small pond with a surprisingly rich history a testament to the resilience of nature and the efforts to preserve it.
