A colossal willow cathedral. That’s the Weidendom in Rostock’s IGA Park. This isn’t your typical church. It’s a breathtaking structure crafted entirely from living willow branches. Imagine 600 volunteers from thirteen nations working tirelessly. They built this marvel during the 2001 International Garden Exhibition.
The Weidendom boasts a 15-meter-high dome spanning 52 meters. A testament to human ingenuity and collaboration. It’s considered the world’s largest living structure. Initially conceived as a church it’s hosted weddings concerts and even theatrical performances. The tranquil space under its leafy canopy is truly unique.
Sadly a fire in June 2022 severely damaged the Weidendom. The right wing and the dome were lost. Only the nave remains. But hope is not lost. The IGA Park team has launched the “Initiative Weidendom”. They’re committed to its reconstruction. They seek volunteers to help recreate this amazing place. Just like the initial construction this rebuilding is a labor of love and community effort.
