A simple chapel. That is what we see before us. It is the Wegmacher Kapelle. Its story is more complex than its appearance suggests.

This small chapel is on a roadside near Berchtesgaden. It sparks controversy. Some locals call it the church of the dark side. Its construction in 1997 used materials from Adolf Hitler’s former home, the Berghof.

Imagine this a place of peace built from stones of infamy. These stones allegedly paved the terrace of Hitler’s Berghof. Jewish slave laborers quarried them in concentration camps.

Matthias Ferwagner was the chapel’s architect. He said his design explicitly addressed using materials from Hitler’s old home. The idea was that the stones somehow needed cleansing. Ferwagner envisioned the chapel as a place where people with evil intentions could stop and purge their minds.

The chapel’s construction has divided the community. Some worry it could become a Nazi shrine. There were reports of neo-Nazis leaving praise notes and candles for Hitler.

Local authorities admitted the origin of the materials. It caused local and international media attention. This raised questions about using anything connected to the architect of the Holocaust in a sacred space.

The Bavarian government had a policy against using Nazi-related materials for such projects. The chapel’s existence challenges this policy. It questions how we reconcile history with spirituality.

Despite the controversy the Wegmacher Kapelle stands. It is on the B20 road between Bad Reichenhall and Berchtesgaden.

What do you think? A place for reflection or a monument to a dark past? The Wegmacher Kapelle prompts us to consider the complicated layers of history. It encourages us to think about memory and atonement. It asks how we transform symbols of hate into beacons of hope.
