Did you know that this path tells a story of rebellion? This is the Weg der Revolutionäre Plaque. It commemorates a pivotal moment in the Badische Revolution.
The Weg der Revolutionäre Plaque marks a key event. It recalls the struggles of revolutionaries in 1848 and 1849. These democrats marched from various towns in southern Baden. Their goal was to overthrow the government in Karlsruhe. However all five groups of insurgents were defeated by the military.
Here at the Jägerbrunnen, history unfolded. On Easter Sunday, April 23, 1848, Gustav Struve led troops. These freedom fighters from the Sigel column clashed with government forces. A brief but intense battle ensued. Three soldiers and twenty freedom fighters lost their lives. The revolutionaries were forced to flee.
This defeat led to the dissolution of the Sigel troop. Out of 4000 men, only 400 remained. Franz Sigel aimed to join other rebels in Freiburg on Easter Monday. His attempt failed and his troop disbanded.
The Weg der Revolutionäre trail opened in 2020. It commemorates the last division of Hecker’s column in 1848. This path begins at Horben’s Town Hall. It winds through the woods above the modern road. You will pass near Germany’s oldest tree. This Douglas fir is called Waldtraut vom Mühlwald. The route descends to Günterstal. It crosses the valley near St Lioba Abbey. Finally it ends above the Holbeinpferd at Sternwaldeck. The Freiburg Wiehre train station is not far from here.
The Schwarzwaldverein has led hikes. These hikes trace the paths of the 1848 revolutionaries. In one instance, 175 people joined to commemorate the 175th anniversary. On average each hike had 35 participants. People of all ages showed interest in the topic.
Many freedom fighters sought refuge in America after the revolution failed. Friedrich Hecker and Franz Sigel were among them. A contemporary illustration shows Hecker’s arrival in New York.
The Kloster St. Lioba is worth a visit. Guided tours of its gardens are available upon request. The abbey shop is also worth exploring.
