Did you know Weequahic Park’s name comes from a Lenape word meaning “head of the cove”? Imagine the Lenape people using Weequahic Lake as a boundary. This vast park in Newark New Jersey holds centuries of history.

Weequahic Park wasn’t always a park. Initially farmland fairgrounds and swampland it was purchased in 1896. The Olmsted Brothers firm designed the park transforming it into a beautiful space. President Ulysses S Grant even rode horses at the Waverly Fairgrounds which was part of the original land.

Weequahic Lake the park’s centerpiece is the largest lake in Essex County. It’s a natural body of water deepened by a dam. The lake wasn’t always as deep as it is today. A dam built in 1903 raised the water level. The area was once used by the Lenni-Lenape for pow-wows. Today visitors enjoy a variety of activities like fishing boating and walking trails.

The Divident Hill Pavilion built in 1916 marks the spot where Newark and Elizabeth’s commissioners met to settle their boundary line. It’s a beautiful structure and a testament to the park’s rich history. The park also boasts the oldest public golf course in New Jersey. It initially opened with nine holes and was later expanded to eighteen.

In the early 2020s Weequahic Park saw upgrades. The Feldman Middleton Jr Community Center opened. This new center serves as a hub for community activities. The park’s historical significance and community importance are undeniable. The Weequahic Park Association and Weequahic Park Sports Authority work tirelessly to preserve this treasure. They strive to protect and improve this remarkable place. The park’s history is interwoven with the community making it a vital part of Newark’s identity. Weequahic Park is more than just a park it’s a living legacy.
