Websters Theatre

Did the stones of Websters Theatre ever dream they’d host uproarious laughter instead of hushed prayers? Websters Theatre, once known as Lansdowne Parish Church, stands on Great Western Road. This grand, gothic revival structure, designed by John Honeyman, opened its doors as a church in 1863. The cost? A hefty £12,400. Websters Theatre has a history as rich and vibrant as the stained glass that adorns its walls. The church served the community for over a century, witnessing countless baptisms, weddings, and sermons. Its iconic spire, one of the slimmest in Europe, soared 218 feet into the Glasgow sky, a beacon of faith. The church boasted stunning stained glass, including works by Ward and Hughes (installed in 1865 and 1873). Later, Alfred Webster, a Glasgow School of Art attendee, added his own artistic touch in 1913, followed by his son, Gordon Webster, in the 1950s. Inside, a magnificent pipe organ, crafted by Norman and Beard, filled the sanctuary with music starting in 1911. Even a war memorial frieze by Evelyn Beale, added in 1923, graced its walls. In 2014, the congregation merged with another, and the building was sold, marking the end of an era. But from the ashes of Lansdowne Parish Church rose Websters Theatre. The name honors Alfred Webster, the artist behind some of the church’s breathtaking stained-glass windows. Today, Websters Theatre is a vibrant hub of art and entertainment. The main theatre seats 182, while the smaller Playhouse holds 55. They host a diverse range of performances, from plays and concerts to pantomimes. You can even enjoy a meal or a drink in the former church halls, now a bustling bar and restaurant. The transformation of this sacred space into a secular one is a testament to the ever-evolving nature of our cities.
