This isn’t just a building it’s a living history. Waverley Shul has witnessed generations of joyous celebrations and moments of quiet reflection.

Waverley Shul opened its doors in 1953. It quickly became a central part of Johannesburg’s Jewish community. The original architect was Dr Joseph Ingber. His daughter Judy Jaye shared stories of her father’s vision. She also remembered the first rabbi Rabbi Jacob Newman.

The shul’s 60th anniversary was a spectacular event. Chief Rabbi Warren Goldstein spoke. He shared memories of his early career there. He served as rabbi of the Youth Shul. Rabbi Dr David Nossel the current rabbi also spoke. He proudly recounted his bar mitzvah at Waverley Shul.

The anniversary celebration honored original founders. Claude Brewer Wally Segal and Natie Aremband were present. They received silver Yads for their dedication. Beila Copans who catered for over 40 years was also honored. Her legendary peppermint crisp cake remains a cherished memory.

Waverley Shul wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a community center. It hosted events such as bar mitzvahs and weddings. It also played a vital role in supporting people in times of crisis. Many people found comfort and support within its walls.
