Across the city, a ripple of creativity crests and falls. We stand before Wave, a sculpture by Chakaia Booker. It’s one of 52 wave sculptures that once graced New York City. This was part of the La Mer Wave Walk, a project by Project 0 and La Mer. The Wave Walk aimed to raise awareness for ocean conservation. For a brief time, these artistic waves washed over the five boroughs. They were designed by celebrities like Slash, Cara Delevingne, Sienna Miller, and Keith Richards. Each wave was a unique expression of the artist’s connection to the ocean. Cara Delevingne’s “Mother Ocean” at the United Nations Plaza spoke of the ocean as the life-giver of our planet. Slash’s wave, near Yankee Stadium, featured an orange octopus in a top hat, reflecting the guitarist’s personal style. Suki Waterhouse’s “Rise” at Cooper Square explored the power of myth and its impact on the environment. Keith Richards’ “Human Tide” at the James Hotel on Grand Street evoked a sense of drama. These sculptures weren’t permanent fixtures. They were displayed from May 20th to June 21st, culminating in an auction at Sotheby’s. The proceeds benefited the La Mer Blue Heart Oceans Fund for Project 0. Though the Wave Walk is over, Chakaia Booker’s Wave remains. It reminds us of the ephemeral nature of art and the enduring power of the ocean.
