Could a church be a “house of light”? For Wattana Church, this isn’t just a metaphorical question. Wattana Church has a long and fascinating history, deeply intertwined with the growth of Christianity in Thailand. Its story begins not with towering structures but with a single act of faith. In 1874, Mrs. Harriet M. House planted the seeds for Wattana Church. Back then, it was simply known as a “gospel house”. It was a beacon of hope and faith for the small but growing Christian community in Bangkok. A decade later, under the leadership of Miss Edna Sarah Cole, the first church building was erected in 1886. This marked a significant step forward, solidifying Wattana Church’s presence. Over the years, Wattana Church continued to evolve, reflecting the changing times. Dr. George B. McFarland, a prominent figure, dreamt of establishing a hospital alongside the church. This vision, however, took a different path. Instead of a hospital, the building that now houses the church bookstore was constructed. It stands as a testament to McFarland’s commitment to the church’s growth and service to the community. But the story doesn’t end there. In 1922, the church underwent a significant transformation, adopting a new name, “Wattana Church,” meaning “house of light” in Thai. This name perfectly captured the church’s mission to spread the light of faith and knowledge. Wattana Church’s journey from a humble “gospel house” to a “house of light” mirrors the growth of Christianity in Bangkok. It is a place where faith, history, and community converge, a shining beacon of hope and inspiration in the bustling heart of Bangkok.
