Hidden in the heart of Detroit’s Brush Park, Watson Playground whispers tales of community spirit and renewal. It’s more than just swings and slides. This small park, tucked away on Watson Street, has been a labor of love, a testament to the power of residents who refused to let their green space disappear. Watson Playground was nearly lost, swallowed up by development like other parks in the neighborhood. But the community rallied. They fought to have it officially recognized by the City of Detroit Parks & Rec Department in 2017. And they didn’t stop there. Three adjacent vacant parcels, including a community garden, were added to Watson Playground in 2020. This more than doubled its size, bringing it to just over an acre. This expansion was a victory. The community envisioned a vibrant gathering place. They held meetings, conducted surveys, and worked with designers to create a park that reflected their dreams. The final plan includes improved lawns, a concrete walkway system, beautiful plantings, shade trees, benches, upgraded lighting, a playground, and even a nature play/sensory zone. The transformation of Watson Playground has been a journey, with its share of delays and hurdles. But through it all, the community’s vision persisted. Thanks to their dedication, and the collaboration of organizations like the Brush Park CDC and the City of Detroit, Watson Playground is a thriving green oasis in the urban landscape. It stands as a reminder that even small spaces can hold big dreams.
