Historically, canals from mountain springs nourished Beijing. These springs, integral to the city’s growth, dwindled due to deforestation. This forced Beijing to adapt. The Water Source transformed, shifting from springs to groundwater and reservoirs created by dams in the 1950s. Today, groundwater, the lifeblood of Beijing, satisfies about 75% of its needs. This reliance, however, has consequences. Over-extraction has led to a falling water table and land subsidence. The Miyun Reservoir, Beijing’s largest single water source, plays a crucial role in the Water Source story.
