Built in 1586 Water Eaton Manor stands proudly before us. This magnificent manor house wasn’t always so grand. Originally built for Sir Edward Frere it was later reduced in size. Imagine the changes it has witnessed over the centuries.

Water Eaton Manor holds a significant place in Oxfordshire’s history. Its name itself tells a tale. ‘Water’ distinguishes it from Woodeaton another nearby location. The ‘Eaton’ part originates from the Old English word for ‘farm by a river’. The River Cherwell flows nearby lending credence to this ancient meaning.

The manor’s story isn’t just about its origins. Gothic Revival architect GF Bodley restored the house in 1890 making it his home. This restoration ensured its survival. The manor house even played a role in the end of the First English Civil War. In June 1646 the Articles of Surrender for the siege of Oxford were agreed upon here. They were signed though in a different location the Audit House of Christ Church.

Notice the two 17th-century pavilions. These were likely guest houses. A square 17th-century dovecote also remains a testament to the manor’s agricultural past. Water Eaton Manor’s significance extends beyond its walls. It’s a Grade II* listed building a symbol of Oxfordshire’s rich architectural heritage. It’s now available to let for the first time in over 50 years. What stories will it hold in the future?
