As I mentioned, Wat Xieng Thong is not just any temple, this one is a significant monument to Lao religion and art. It was created as a symbol of great historic importance. Built between 1559 and 1560, the temple remains one of the most important monasteries in Laos. It was commissioned by King Setthathirath, who was the ruler of the Lan Xang, a kingdom covering modern-day Laos. Wat Xieng Thong means “Temple of the Golden City,” in Lao. The wat was a royal one, patronized by the royal family until 1975. It functioned as a place for the kings to be crowned as well as a place for monks and commoners to worship. It served as a shrine, a library, a home for Buddhist relics, and a place to celebrate religious festivals and rites. The temple is truly one of the most beautiful structures in Luang Prabang. It is a prime example of an architectural style called Luang Prabang style. The temple complex is known for the intricate design and mosaic work. There are elaborate murals. The rich colors and golden stenciling are quite the sight, adding to the temple’s captivating beauty. The sim is the central hall of a Laotian temple. Wat Xieng Thong’s sim features nine cascading roofs. The sim is decorated with gold stenciling. The central part of the roof is a design called Dok So Fa. This features small, gold-covered pagodas that are designed in a way that makes them appear to hook upwards to the sky. The number of pagodas and overall detail of this sculpture indicates the relative importance of the temple. The sim’s interior has gold stenciling on it. It’s like a gigantic art piece. With the use of gold, the temple is really beautiful and radiant. And the rich red and black walls are also decorated with mythological scenes and geometric designs. The entire sim is a testament to the craftsmanship and aesthetic sensibility of the Lao people. Wat Xieng Thong continues to be a popular destination for tourists and pilgrims alike. It is a place where art and religion meet, creating a truly unforgettable experience.
