“Monastery of Ten Thousand Rice Fields”, a curious name, isn’t it? That’s what locals sometimes call Wat Vatmounena Somphouaram. Right here before you stands this beautiful temple. Its name speaks volumes about its history and the deep connection it shares with the community. Wat Vatmounena Somphouaram was built in 1533 under the rule of King Photthisarat. The name ‘Meunna’, as it’s sometimes written, refers to an old Laotian unit of weight roughly equal to 12 kilos. The construction of Wat Vatmounena Somphouaram was a community effort. Each villager donated a ‘meun’ of rice, about 12 kilos, towards its construction. This act of collective generosity earned the temple its evocative nickname. The temple’s sim, with its elegant three-tiered roof, is a testament to this shared heritage. Topped with a ‘dok so faa’ of nine parasols, the sim is flanked by peristyles supported by five rectangular columns on each side. In 1920, the temple underwent significant restoration, with the addition of two lateral galleries to the sim, further enhancing its architectural splendor. This blend of history, faith, and community spirit makes Wat Vatmounena Somphouaram a truly special place in Luang Prabang.
