Curious about a temple well-regarded for its teachings? Then step closer to Wat Thepwanaram. This temple is also known locally as Wat Manik. It got this name because of its location in Bahn Manik.
Wat Thepwanaram sits in the Srisoonthorn district. It’s not always easy to find. But that adds to its charm. If you’re coming from Phuket, turn left at the Heroine’s monument. Follow the road towards Surin Beach. After a kilometer or two, watch for the temple archway on your left.
Once, I visited Wat Thepwanaram on a late Thursday afternoon. There was a bustling street market right at the entrance. It was a vibrant welcome to the temple grounds.
I was expecting a small temple. I was surprised by several well-maintained buildings. Wat Thepwanaram is supported by local hotels. Locals highly regard the temple’s teachings. Families often bring their children to enroll as novice monks. The temple holds a Summer Camp or mass ordination ceremony. This allows the children to participate with their friends.
The temple’s location is also quite special. It lies on the edge of hills and rubber plantations. Surrounding the temple are lakes. These lakes were once part of tin mining areas. For family members less interested in temples, there’s an alternative. Anthem Wakeboard Park is close by.
Wat Thepwanaram is a fairly large temple. It holds New Year prayers every year on December 30th and 31st. These prayers take place in the main courtyard. The courtyard can accommodate 300 to 500 people. Many men choose to become novice monks here for a short time. They do this often to show respect for their families.
If you travel from the Heroines Monument, take the Srisoonthorn Road exit. You will be sign posted for Surin Beach. After about a 3 km drive you will see Wat Thepwanaram on your left. It’s just before Anthem Park.
