Dedicated to serenity. Wat That Thong is a Thai Buddhist temple. It is located in the heart of Bangkok. However, it is not on most traveler’s itineraries. They often opt for famous temples. These include Wat Arun or Wat Pho. But Wat That Thong holds its own charm and history.
Wat That Thong was built in 1937. It sits where two previous temples once stood. These temples were Wat That and Wat Thong. The new temple carries on their history through its name.
In 1938, construction began on Wat That Thong. It became a royal monastery and funeral temple. It is located in Bangkok’s Sukhumvit area. The temple combines the names of two older temples. These are Wat Na Phra That and Wat Thong Lang. King Rama VIII granted the land for construction. This happened on October 24, 1940. This grant is known as the wisung khama sima.
The biggest attraction of Wat That Thong is the golden Buddha statue. It sits in the lotus position. It is beautifully crafted.
Monks are often around the temple. They are willing to converse and show you around. They can give you a better understanding. Not all monks speak English. Donations to the temple after a tour are appreciated.
Princess Galyani Watthana became the temple’s patron in 2007. She introduced a new logo. It featured her initials. The ordination hall was built in 1952. Phra Suppanyu is the main Buddha image. It is housed in the ordination hall or ubosot. This seated Buddha touches the earth. This gesture is called bhumisparsa mudra.
Several other Buddha statues are in front of Phra Suppanyu. To the left is the gilded Phra Phutta Chinintara image. It is seated in the maravijaya pose. To the right is the gilded Luang Pho Phra Phutta Abhipala Puang Chon image. It is depicted in the pastoral care pose. In between them is the Phra Phutta Monthon Preecha Sukhothai image. It is also seated in the maravijaya pose.
Wat That Thong also has a chedi. It contains relics of the Buddha. Many temples in Thailand have crematoriums. Wat That Thong specializes in funerals. It organizes them on a large scale. The temple offers services. Monks perform rituals. The remains are cremated. Ashes are stored in vaults.
King Bhumipol Adulyadej elevated the temple. It became a third-class royal temple on May 29, 2012. This recognized its importance. It also recognized its role in the community.
Wat That Thong is open every day. Locals and tourists can pray and light incense. They can also give donations. You can walk around the grounds. You can go inside the temple. Wear appropriate clothing. No vests skirts or shorts are allowed.
The easiest way to get to Wat That Thong is by using the BTS. Get off at Ekkamai BTS. Take exit 3. This will take you outside the entrance. Alternatively, take a taxi. Direct the driver to “Ekkamai BTS”. Many will not know the temple’s name.
The best time to visit Wat That Thong is during Buddhist holidays. Songkran is a great time. They hold fun fairs for two weeks. These involve carnival-style games shows and Thai food.
