“Lost,” a whisper echoed through the towering gates of Wat Sutthawat. A young monk, his saffron robes vibrant against the weathered stone, traced a finger across a faded mural. Wat Sutthawat has stood here for centuries, a silent witness to the ebb and flow of Bangkok’s history. King Rama I began its construction in 1807, initially naming it Wat Maha Sutthawat. He envisioned a grand temple, a testament to his reign. But like life itself, construction was a winding path. Rama II continued the work, his skilled hands leaving their mark on the intricate wooden doors. Yet, it was not until the reign of Rama III, in 1847 or 1848, that Wat Sutthawat finally reached completion. Inside, the magnificent Phra Sri Sakyamuni Buddha image, brought from Sukhothai Province, emanates a serene aura. At the base, 28 Chinese pagodas stand guard, representing the 28 Buddhas who have graced the earth. Look closely at the murals adorning the walls. They tell tales of Buddhist cosmology, swirling with vibrant colors and intricate detail. One particular scene depicts a preta, a hungry ghost from Siamese belief, receiving water from a monk. This image gave rise to the local saying, “Pret Wat Suthat,” a chilling reminder of the supernatural world that intertwines with the earthly realm. Wat Sutthawat is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a living, breathing entity, woven into the very fabric of Bangkok. Its walls whisper stories of kings and monks, of devotion and artistry. As you leave its hallowed grounds, carry with you a sense of wonder, a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Thai history and spirituality.
