Hidden in plain sight, Wat Suan Yai whispers tales of Nonthaburi’s past. Wat Suan Yai wasn’t always the city we see today. Before the bustling markets and modern conveniences, Nonthaburi was a smaller town. The town centered around Suan Yai subdistrict. On February 14, 1936, Nonthaburi officially became a town municipality. This municipality initially encompassed only Suan Yai, a mere 2.5 square kilometers. Imagine Wat Suan Yai standing as a testament to this era, witnessing the town’s transformation. Over time, Nonthaburi expanded. It absorbed neighboring subdistricts. On September 25, 1995, Nonthaburi grew to encompass 38.9 square kilometers. It officially became a city municipality. Wat Suan Yai remained, a quiet observer of this growth. Today, Nonthaburi boasts a population of over 254,375. This makes it the most populous city municipality in Thailand, outside of Bangkok. Wat Suan Yai continues to hold its place within this thriving city. It stands as a link to a simpler past, a reminder of Nonthaburi’s humble beginnings.
