Did this Bodhi tree witness Chiang Mai’s liberation? Perhaps. Right before you stands the unassuming Wat Si Koet. It is home to a remarkable 500-year-old Bodhi tree. This ancient giant, guarded by Devata figures and a wall of Dhamma wheels, has silently watched over the centuries. Wat Si Koet itself dates back to 1638. The temple we see today, however, was restored after the Burmese left Chiang Mai in the late 18th century during the reign of King Kawila. Look around and soak in the intricate details of the viharn and ubosot. Notice the naga serpent motifs adorning the roofs, and the vibrant red and gold accents against the pristine white walls. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of Lanna architecture and a peaceful haven in the heart of Chiang Mai.
