The ornate patterns on the roof of Wat Samakkhi Sutthawat shimmer in the afternoon sun. Tucked away in the Bang O neighborhood of Bangkok, it stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the city. This temple, founded in 1897, resonates with the history of a bygone era. While the origins of its founding remain a mystery, it was originally known as Wat Bang Phra Khru, named for its location near a canal called Khlong Bang Phra Khru. This canal itself was a lifeline for the Mon community, who had migrated to this region from Ayutthaya.

Wat Samakkhi Sutthawat is a fascinating blend of traditional Mon and Thai architecture. Its ubosot, or ordination hall, reflects Mon design with its simplicity; devoid of intricate patterns. But look down at the hall’s base. You’ll see the foundation is made of sturdy teak wood. It was renovated in 1970, incorporating a touch of Thai artistry. The most impressive sight inside the hall is the principal Buddha image in the impressive Mara Vichai posture.

Step back into history as you gaze upon Luang Pho Atsajan, a miraculous Buddha image that emerged from the sema, the temple’s boundary marker. This image, dating back to the Ayutthaya period, holds an aura of mystery and sacredness. Just outside the ubosot, you’ll find the sermon hall, built in 1941. A place of spiritual contemplation, it’s here that the rich history of Wat Samakkhi Sutthawat continues to unfold. It stands as a peaceful sanctuary, offering a moment of tranquility amidst the bustling energy of Bangkok.
