The air is thick with the scent of incense. Wat Rakhang Kositaram Woramahawihan, a second-class royal monastery, sits majestically on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River. Its grandeur seems to echo the history of Bangkok, a story woven with ancient temples, regal palaces, and powerful monarchs. You’re standing in front of this historical monument, a testament to Thailand’s rich Buddhist heritage. Wat Rakhang, as it’s affectionately known, was once called Wat Bangwayai, a name that whispers of the Ayutthaya period, the era when Bangkok was still a nascent settlement.

King Taksin, the founder of the Thonburi Kingdom, transformed this already venerable temple into a royal monastery. He revitalized the wat and initiated a grand project to revise the sacred Tripitaka scriptures. As legends have it, in the reign of King Phutthayotfa Chulalok (Rama I), a remarkable bell was unearthed within the temple grounds. The king felt its melodious resonance was befitting the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew) and had it moved. In exchange, he sent five new bells to Wat Rakhang, leading to its name change, reflecting the importance of these instruments in Thai Buddhism. Did you know that many Thai temples have bells that visitors can strike for good luck? It is believed to bring fame and reputation.

Wat Rakhang holds another special significance. The first Supreme Patriarch, the spiritual head of Thailand’s Buddhist clergy, established his residence here. Somdet Phra Sangkharat, as he was known, presided over the spiritual landscape of the Rattanakosin era. Today, Wat Rakhang continues to be a spiritual hub, a place where monks and devotees alike find solace and guidance. It’s one of the nine prominent temples that are part of the “Respect to the Nine Temples” campaign, a testament to the enduring power of Thai Buddhism. It’s a place where history whispers in your ear, where the vibrant present embraces the tranquil past, and where faith meets with the quiet murmur of the Chao Phraya River.
