Imagine walking through a forest, the air thick with the scent of ancient earth, the sounds of birdsong filling your ears. Suddenly, you emerge into a clearing, and before you lies Wat Pupia, a temple frozen in time. It is not the grand spectacle of many other temples in Thailand. Instead, it is a whisper of the past, a reminder of the once thriving city of Wiang Kum Kam.

It is named Wat Pupia, which means “Temple of the Old Man Pia”. The locals, who lived in Wiang Kum Kam centuries ago, named it so. It is not known why they chose this name, but it adds a certain charm, a touch of mystery to the place. This temple, unlike many of the others, is semi-ruined. The walls are crumbling, the stucco work is peeling, but it offers a unique window into the past.

The Chedi, the central structure of the temple, is the most well-preserved part. It stands tall, like a lonely sentinel guarding a forgotten past. The Chedi has a high base, then a body with four niches on each side. Each niche holds a Buddha image, and they are topped by a small bell shape. These Buddha images, although weathered by time, are still powerful. Their serene gazes seem to radiate wisdom and peace.

Back in 1985, archaeologists began excavating the site. They uncovered a Vihan, a prayer hall, in front of the Chedi, The remains of two constructions, one on top of the other, show that Wat Pupia was not always as we see it today. This site was once an active, vital part of Wiang Kum Kam, a bustling city.

It is believed that Wat Pupia was built sometime in the 16th or 17th centuries. The intricate architecture, the beautiful stucco work, and the presence of a Ubosot – a rite pavilion – all point to this era. But sadly, Wat Pupia’s story was cut short. It was abandoned, overrun by vegetation, and forgotten by time. Fortunately, its rediscovery and partial restoration gave us a glimpse and a reason to celebrate its unique past.

As you stand here today, surrounded by the ruins of Wat Pupia, you feel a sense of peace. You feel a connection to the past – a reminder of the impermanence of all things. The story of Wat Pupia might be fragmented, but it is also a story of resilience, a reminder that even in ruin, beauty can be found. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of a bygone era.
