Let’s step inside Wat Puak Pia, a Lanna-style temple without a chedi. This temple, also known as Wat Phuak Pia, is located within the Wiang Kum Kam archaeological complex. You can still see remnants of stucco work and, amazingly, an intact layout, which is incredibly rare for a temple dating back to the historical Lanna period.

Here, in the heart of Chiang Mai, we stand in serene surroundings, appreciating the beauty of the viharn with its tiered roof and naga guardians. It’s striking how fiercely protective they look! These serpent-like deities, extending along the bargeboards, are being disgorged by makarras, mythological creatures that are a central part of Lanna mythology, and are often intertwined with naga symbolism.

Wat Puak Pia was likely built to honor an important figure by the name of Pia. Look up at the colorful murals on the walls depicting scenes from the Jataka tales. These depict the Buddha’s past lives and offer great insight into the Buddhist worldview. The ceiling provides more fascinating details. The Deva figures floating in the sky, painted on the cross beams, add a sense of grandeur, as if the gods themselves are watching over the temple.

Wat Puak Pia isn’t just a place of worship, it’s a sanctuary for exploring the history and art of Lanna traditions, where old and new blend harmoniously. As you leave, remember the stories etched into the walls, the intricate details of the architecture, and the sense of peace that settles over you. Wat Puak Pia is a reminder of the enduring power of faith and tradition.
