Whispers of ancient spirits linger here at Wat Prek Luong. This isn’t just any temple. It’s a place where history and faith intertwine. Wat Prek Luong stands proudly near the Mekong River. Its location offers stunning views across to Phnom Penh.
For centuries Wat Prek Luong has been more than bricks and mortar. It’s the heart of Prek Luong village. Its existence predates even Phnom Penh’s rise as the capital before 1864. The very name Prek Luong means Royal Canal. It hints at a time when a royal palace stood here. The canal connected the palace to the river. This suggests a substantial royal presence not a mere holiday home.
Wat Prek Luong’s story is entwined with the village spirit Lok Ta Dam Bo. This spirit guardian has watched over the village for generations. Originally represented by a stone the Khmer Rouge destroyed the original Buddha tree and removed the stone. Nobody knows where it is now.
After the war a new Buddha tree sapling grew unexpectedly. This was interpreted as a sign. The village elder the former commune chief orchestrated a ceremony. He invited Lok Ta Dam Bo to reside in this new location. A local artist who had studied in Phnom Penh dreamt of the spirit. He created a statue depicting Lok Ta Dam Bo. One hand is on his knee holding a rod a symbol of authority. The other hand is in the earth-touching position of a Buddha but with the palm outward. This statue now sits in a small concrete shed. It faces west unlike Buddha statues which always face east.
Next to the shrine is a dining hall. This is where a yearly festival honours Lok Ta Dam Bo. Monks preside over the festival. This reflects the harmonious integration of spirit worship with Buddhism. The spirit is revered as a powerful patron for those who show respect. Those who disrespect him are said to suffer illness.
The artist who created Lok Ta Dam Bo’s statue claims to have seen the spirit in dreams and waking life. He asked for protection and prosperity. He received both becoming a rich man. His wife is the village spirit medium. Together they serve their community creating holy talismans.
