The scent of incense hangs heavy in the air. A gentle breeze rustles through the ancient trees surrounding Wat Prathan Phon.

Wat Prathan Phon is not widely known. Yet it holds a quiet charm. Its history is interwoven with that of its grand neighbor Wat Chedi Luang. Both share a rich past steeped in Lanna traditions.

Originally Wat Prathan Phon was not a temple at all. Instead it served as a royal palace. The fifth ruler of Chiang Mai Chao Mahawong resided here. He lived in this very building. The hall was later moved to its current location. This was done during renovations of Wat Chedi Luang. The building’s transformation into a monastery occurred in 1876.

Look closely. You can still see traces of its royal past. The ornate peacock above the main door is a clue. This symbol represents the northern nobility. Below it a sleeping dog marks Chao Mahawong’s birth year. The peacock and the dog. They are symbolic reminders of the building’s previous life.

The main Buddha image Phra Chao Pan Tao sits on the main altar. It was cast in 1498. This magnificent statue is the heart of Wat Prathan Phon.

The temple’s wooden assembly hall is a marvel of craftsmanship. It’s made of teak. It’s 21 meters long 11 meters wide and 14 meters high. Twenty-eight pillars support the impressive structure. The wood carvings above the main door and windows showcase the exquisite Lanna style.

Wat Prathan Phon is a focal point for celebrations. The Visakha Bucha festival brings hundreds of small butter lamps. Monks place them on the water and around the grounds. The Loy Krathong festival adds another layer of magic.

The temple has faced challenges. In 1975 renovations repaired rain damage. More recently insect damage necessitated a lengthy closure for repairs.

Wat Prathan Phon is more than just a temple. It’s a living testament to Chiang Mai’s history. It’s a place of peace reflection and quiet beauty. Take a moment to absorb the serene atmosphere. Let the whispers of the past surround you. Remember Wat Prathan Phon. It is a hidden gem in Chiang Mai.
