Wat Phra Kaew

Across the Chao Phraya River, from the former capital of Thonburi, rose the glorious Wat Phra Kaew. King Rama I, the first king of the Chakri dynasty, envisioned a temple that would reflect the power and legitimacy of his new reign. Wat Phra Kaew, formally known as Wat Phra Si Rattana Satsadaram or the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, became that vision. Construction began in 1783, within the sacred grounds of the Grand Palace in Bangkok. Wat Phra Kaew’s main hall was the first structure completed, built of solid masonry while the king’s own residence was still wood. The most sacred Buddhist temple in Thailand, Wat Phra Kaew houses the Emerald Buddha, the country’s palladium. This 66-centimeter-tall meditating Buddha, carved from green jasper, sits upon a magnificent multi-tiered pedestal. It is not just a statue. It is a symbol of the nation’s prosperity and a focal point for royal ceremonies. Three times a year, the king himself participates in a ritual changing of the Emerald Buddha’s golden garments, a ceremony believed to bring good fortune to Thailand. Look around you. The Ubosot, the ordination hall, dominates the southern part of the complex. Its roof, adorned with glazed tiles and depictions of the Hindu god Narayana riding Garuda, gleams in the sun. Hundreds of gilded wind-bells chime softly in the breeze. The exterior walls, covered in gold leaf and colored glass, depict a royal procession by land and water. Inside, murals recount tales of the Buddha’s life, from his enlightenment to his triumph over the demon Mara. The complex is a treasure trove of art and history. The Phra Mondop houses sacred Buddhist texts, including a silver-woven mat and a mother-of-pearl manuscript cabinet. The Phra Si Rattana Chedi, a golden, bell-shaped stupa, holds relics of the Buddha. Even the gates are guarded by towering yaksha giants, each with its unique color and crown, adding to the mystical aura of Wat Phra Kaew. This temple is not merely a place of worship. It is a living testament to Thai history, culture, and spirituality. Each successive king has contributed to Wat Phra Kaew’s splendor, adding to its buildings and treasures, ensuring its place as the nation’s preeminent place of worship and a national shrine for the monarchy.
